Browns Races

The Browns River at Kingston is world famous for its still brown water, its superb examples of aquatic weeds and a plethora of brown ducks.  But what really puts the Browns river on the international sporting venue map, is the fortnightly Browns Races conducted by the DCC through the daylight savings months.  Frequented by wildwater racing paddlers, sea kayakers, slalom paddlers, multi-sports paddlers, ocean sk

Browns is a true spectator event for all ages and species.

i racers, and even stand up paddle boarders, this handicapped race leads the world in inclusive racing.  The handicap makes for an exciting finish whilst ensuring that all paddlers have equal access to post race BBQ refreshments.

The Browns River is a protected waterway and is also frequently used for introductory programs like the paddle passport program being run by the DCC.

Season 2016-2017

Race Dates:  10 Nov,  24 Nov,  8 Dec,  22 Dec (Xmas BBQ).  2017 Race Dates: TBA.
Cost: $3.00/race or $20 for the season entry (can you find a bigger bargain anywhere?)
Entries:  From 5.45 on the dog beach side of the bridge. Race starts between 6.15 and 6.30 depending on traffic and how quickly people get organised.
Membership: You have to be a member of the Derwent Canoe Club or one of the other three Canoe Tasmania Affiliated Clubs.
 
BBQs:  We’ll try and do one after every race, weather dependent. If the forecast is iffy we might can the BBQ for that week.
New Points System:  This season we’ll trial a points system with an extra special prize at the end of the year for the Points Winner.
1 point per race (participation)
3 points for posting a new personal best time, (personal improvement) and
3 points for being the starter/finisher for a race (sit out a race and run it instead and you’ll get the same as a PB and I’ll get to paddle a bit more).
And of course we’ll have our usual handicap starts from race 3 onward so anyone can win a race and get a line-honours prize at the end of the season prize giving.
